iPhone Figurative Self Portraits
The self portraits are made in response to my mental and physical health. Now 58, I was diagnosed with bi polar disorder when I was 40. A MRI also revealed a pituitary abnormality which has wreaked havoc on my body ever since. I now have a neurological condition called essential tremor which causes tremors and effects balance. The essential tremor ended my 17 year's of working as an artist model and it threatened my ability to make photographs. I now utilize an iPhone to make photographs because I can no longer hold a camera steady enough to make a photograph without shaking.
The photographs are intuitive and spontaneous. They dance the fine line between the repulsion and disillusionment I feel toward my body and the beauty I struggle to find in the pictures.
The photographs fall under the tradition of self portraiture and the male nude. In that tradition, I am exploring aspects of masculinity, mental and physical illness, sexuality, and aging.
