Michael Bach resides in Troy New York along with his wife, the painter, Ruth Young. He holds an A.A.S. Degree in Fine Arts with a Photography concentration from the Junior College of Albany. He earned a B.A. in Photography from the Bard College Undergraduate Photography Program. He was awarded a M.F.A. from the Yale School of Art Graduate Photography Program.

He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. His work is held in public and private collections the most notable being The Catskill Center For Photography at Woodstock's Permanent Collection held at the Samuel Dorsky Museum in New Paltz, New York, The Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute, Utica, New York, Yale University Sterling Library, New Haven, Connecticut, and Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.

His work was published in “Fossil’s of Light and Time, Designed, edited, and curated, by Elizabeth Avedon, Detroit Center For Contemporary Photography, Humble Cats, New Cats in Art Photography, Humble Arts Foundation and Yoffy Press, and he was a nominee for the Mack First Book Award for his book, Mt. Ida, A Pall of Gloom Has Descended Upon Thee, Blurb Publishing 2014.

In 2015, he was the subject of an article on Bi Polar Disorder by the New York Times Sunday Magazine "Michael Bach's Preservation Through Photography" by David La Spina. In 2016, The Times Union extensively interviewed him resulting in the article "Troy Photographer of Nude Self Portraits With Unflinching Eye",

In 2018, he was a photographer selected for Vice Magazine's article entitled "Six Photographers using the camera as therapy" by Jon Feinstein. In 2020, his photographic work on the industrial landscape bordering the Hudson River in Troy, New York will be published in MARIKA Magazine, November 2020 Issue 376. His work was recently selected for inclusion in the exhibition ICP Concerned-A Global Crisis, The International Center For Photography, New York, New York.
